READ ONLY MODE

I am tired of removing all that spam form my forum. So I switched it to read-only mode: It's not allowed anymore to add any new messages. Someday, I might install a new forum here which offers me better ways to keep out spam.
I'm sorry, but I've really had it.

----------

HELP! ProFont/Sheldon bugs in MacOS X

Following bugs were reported to me:
Sheldon obviously doesn't work at all under MacOS X.

There are some problems with ProFont, too:
If you use this font under the terminal app in OS X, typing an o followed by a /, doesn't give you o/ like you'd think, but instead the single character ø (the letter o with a slash through the middle).
Other fonts, like Monaco, don't show this behavior.

If you have any suggestions to get this problems solved, please post'em here...

Tobias,

Well, terminal recognizes the combination as o/, even if it displays it weird. I like it.

For terminal problems regarding ProFont/OSX, try this:
Quote:

I downloaded the ProFont 2.2 package again, and threw the ProFontIsoLatin1 font into my ~/Library/fonts folder. Now I have two ProFonts. The regular one that I use for BBEdit and such, and the Latin1 which I use for the Terminal, and which so far has worked without a hitch. Looks great.

I found the oslash behavior in Hoefler Text also. (by entering an o/ in Terminal and working my way down the fonts list)

It's not just with o/ typed in, but if it shows up on the display by other means, say through a directory listing [ls -F] a directory name ending in o with the trailing slash displayed will show up as oslash.

I'm using iTerm in OS X 10.2, and the size 10 ProFont behaves vvvvvvverry strangely. The cursor is 7 characters to the right of the insert point. Like here:

Last login: Sat Nov 29 03:50:30 on ttyp2
Welcome to Darwin!
[bugge:~] tater% ls <cursor is hereabouts>

And selecting text makes it seem to move in an odd way, too.

9 point works normally.

Anyone else seeing this?

Hi tatere,

sorry I can't help you -- I'm still working with MacOS 9. But maybe somebody else here knows how to help?

Regarding your signature:

Better now?

More OS X 10.3 problems...

If I use ProFont in Terminal, it chops off the bottom of y, g, q, etc... they all look like "q", the bottom pixels are chopped off...

Tobias, you really need to get OS X its great :)

Note: I do not see the o/ problem in Terminal on OS X 10.3 (Panther)

<Skye>, ,

I have been using ProFont in OS X Terminal and have overcome the problem of descenders getting chopped.

Under the Terminal menu, choose Display...
then hit the "Set Font..." button.
Nudge the Height slider one fifth of a unit to the right. (And the width 1 and 2/5 of a unit to the right helps with the appearance too.) [My unit = space between the tick marks for those sliders.]
ProFontISOLatin1 at 12 points looks good on a large monitor.

I typed in a couple of lines with curly braces (which are sensitive to that issue) and experimented with the font height to figure out the minimum stretch needed to stop the problem.

If you edit the file ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Terminal.plist you can see the effect those sliders have on the settings: FontWidthSpacing and FontHeightSpacing (mine show up as about 1.066 and 1.03)

I used to have that height spacing problem, except possibly at 11pt size, when I tried using ProFont with MindTerm (SSH terminal in Java).

<Robert Simms>,

Thanks!! That did the trick nicely. Also, underline re-appeared in Terminal with the extra height.
Works perfectly now in OS X 10.3 (at least... for now.... hehe)

I have resolved this problem. I should note, I know nothing about font generation, it was just pure ignorance that I was able to deal with this. I downloaded fontographer, installed it, had to install Classic (ewwwww) as well, opened the font in Fontographer and regenerated it as a TT font.

Since I had spacing issues with the non Latin version, I made ProFontIsoLatin1NoOslash.suit which works perfect for me now. I also regenerated the plain Profont as well, which now does not fall appart for me on the "i" character.

I do not know if I can redistribute these, you will have to ask the author if he would like to include these in his collection.
